Our good fortune with southern BC wildfires this summer being few in number and distant from Mt. Kobau has come to a rather dramatic end. Yesterday afternoon a fire started just across the border in Washington state and quickly burned northward into the hills west of Osoyoos. Designated the Eagle Bluff fire, this quick-spreading threat has slowed somewhat according to reports this morning, and stands a little over 10 km south of the star party site. It is being fought by ground and air crews. Unfortunately, today’s local forecast indicates wind from the south in afternoon and evening. We’ll be watching that carefully. Apart from the obvious worst-case scenario of the fire reaching Mt. Kobau itself, there’s a danger that Highway 3 (which provides access to Kobau) will be closed. Travel on that route is currently “not recommended”. Significant updates regarding this fire will be posted here and on our Facebook page.
