Volunteer Talk!

Friday, July 28th at dusk: The Antikythera Mechanism, the oldest complex gearing – its functions, date and place of manufacture… and likely owner. Using the latest sources, Nic David will discuss this remarkable astronomical calculator’s origins, functions, and its place in the histories of astronomy and technology.

Speaker: Nic David is an archaeologist and anthropologist by trade whose research since the late 1960s has taken him to Central Africa where the total absence of anthropic light pollution encouraged baby steps in astronomy. Retirement from the university of Calgary in 2002 and from fieldwork in 2008 enabled him to begin serious observing, since which time he has built his own 12-inch Johnsonian-Dobsonian-Newtonian and, with his equally enthusiastic wife Judy, accumulated several telescopes.
